Much Ado About The Oral

Twitter was agog once more a few days back with a heated up religious argument on the classification of oral sex as a sin. It was interesting to review so many interesting contributions to the debated topic, one I can say was started up by a tweet from @SarahOmakwu, the senior pastor, Family Worship Centre. A woman of repute and beauty. After defining sodomy according to the dictionary, she went to explain how her supposed definition qualified as a sin.

One of the reviews on this issue was by Yemi Olutoye of NaijaChristians, who wrote a conservative article on the matter. He posited in his article, that it was the conjugal rights of the husband and wife alone to define the path of their sexual lives. He gave an apt explanation to back up his points. I would not be as conservative as Yemi in this article, one that would represent my views in an explicit manner.

To begin with, what is sodomy?

The root word of sodomy is  peccatum Sodomiticum, a Latin set words that mean “sin of Sodom”. The primary meaning of this word was restricted to anal sex or homosexual activities by the Roman Emperor, Justinian I. Note that this was a definition of an Emperor and not a biblical one. The biblical explanation on the sins of Sodom–an expanded one–can be found in Jude 1:7, covering sexual acts with same sex and other immoral acts without any mention of oral sex. Strange flesh in the verse refers to unnatural lusts which speaks to describe homosexuality (Romans 1:27) and sex with animals or spirits.

Where does oral sex come in?

A Catholic saint named Bendictus expanded the meaning of Sodomy, seemingly based on his personal standards as no spiritual backup for his definition is given:

“Benedict broadened the meaning for sodomy to all sexual acts not related to procreation that were therefore deemed counter nature, while among these he still emphasized all interpersonal acts not taking place between human men and women, especially homosexuality.”- Wikipedia.

In the light of Benedict’s definition, any act which did not involve penetration or aimed at procreating was a sin. Now we can notice that it was not just oral sex that this speaks against, it also speaks against the use of sex as a tool of pleasure between man and wife. You are either procreating or sinning. How much sense does that make people? Means all couples are on their way to hell right?

If that is the truth why did Solomon, one time king of Israel once write about a husband finding comfort in the bosom (or breasts) of his wife (Proverbs 5:19)? We see that the verse paraphrased in the earlier sentence speaks to sexual pleasure through interaction with the breasts.

Let me go on to show you some wonderful verses in Songs of Solomon:

As the apple tree among the trees of the wood, so is my beloved among the sons. I sat down under his shadow with great delight, and his fruit was sweet to my taste.”- 2:3

“Awake, north wind, and come, south wind! Blow on my garden, that its fragrance may spread everywhere. Let my beloved come into his garden and taste its choice fruits”- 4:16

The above might be a bit funny, but here is the gospel truth, oral sex does not go down well with so many people. I advise they avoid it but leave those who are married and love it. To say that God frowns at oral sex is pure blasphemy. I would not blame those who religiously stand by this though, it is a sad fact that many believe everything the white man gave us as a teaching was directly from God. We tend to forget that as they taught us they forced their cultural thoughts upon us. A good example is the white wedding started by Queen Victoria.

In conclusion, if you believe oral sex is a sin in marriage and you have experienced any form of punishment because of the act. Hear this, faith itself is a creator so also is fear. You fear that you would be punished for what is not even wrong, fear being a spiritual force synonymous with faith, though in a negative form, would go on and create a punishing experience for you. Listen the Lord and not the pastor, the pastor can be biased sometimes. This does not mean they are fake, just a reminder that they are humans.
